Senior medical students enrolling in one of the Family and Community Medicine courses (research, independent study, preceptorships, subinternships) need to complete various forms that assist us in arranging and evaluating your clinical experience. In this way we document and confirm for the Student Records Office that students are enrolled in and complete an approved course of study.

Description for FCM-840 Family Medicine Subinternship
Objectives-Goals
The purpose of this subinternship is to provide the students with experience in an intern-like role in a Family Medicine training program. This is designed as a predominantly inpatient experience; however, some time may be provided to give students some limited ambulatory experience.
Format
Our Family Medicine department has 2 teams that have subinternships associated with them: 1) one is the original University of Arizona FM Residency, based out of the Alvernon Clinic which is a traditional broad spectrum FM program with an emphasis on integrative and sports medicine (accommodates 2 students per block); 2) the newer one is the BUMC Graduate Consortium FM Residency, based out of the BUMC-South Clinic which has an emphasis on rural medicine (accommodates 2 student per block). The medical student will serve as a subintern team member on a busy inpatient Family Medicine Service. While orders must be co-signed, the subintern will have responsibility commensurate with demonstrated abilities which may include admission history and physical, ordering diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, discharge planning, working with home health and community agencies. Care is provided to all ages from infants to the elderly and in settings from the Emergency Department to regular inpatient setting. Rounds occur daily and include didactics.
