Following residency, I joined Group Health Medical Associate (GHMA) as a family practice physician. I was asked to start an urgent care department to serve the group's new and rather large panel of "HMO" patients (anyone remember Pima Care?). I did so with the intention of returning to a more conventional family practice within two years---I never made it. Between 1981 and 1999 (when GHMA went the way of many large multispecialty groups and disbanded), the urgent care department just grew. When GHMA broke up, I continued to operate the original GHMA urgent care site at Bellvue and Country Club as an independent practice. In 2006 we moved to our current office on Swan at Pima; earlier in 2006, we added a smaller office in Rita Ranch serving SE Tucson.
My family, of whom I'm quite proud
Keeping my FP certification up to date when a number of my same age colleagues have decided it's no longer relevant
Outdoor things: photography, hiking, rediscovering geology (my undergraduate college training)
Finishing. I developed a somewhat adversarial relationship with an acting residency director (naturally, I was blameless) and my last year wasn't as much fun as it might have been; so I was somewhat relieved to get away with my residency certificate.
Mary and I have been married 29 years; our two children, Moira and Daniel are grown and have moved (too far) away - Portland Oregon and Brooklyn.
