Resident Global Health Training Fund

We are asking for your support to enable more residents to participate in this invaluable program. Your contribution can directly help to close the gap in healthcare for those most in need by increasing the number of physicians trained to provide care to the underserved.

About Our ProgramEsther Johnston

Predominantly completed during the second and third years of residency, the track offers residents a valuable service-learning experience. Participants develop expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of common tropical conditions and diseases and expand their clinical knowledge and management skills to prepare them to work in areas of limited resources, all while serving the communities where they are working. Coursework includes lectures, journal clubs, conferences, poster sessions, trips to the US/Mexico border, and a four- to eight-week international clinical experience.

Where We Go

Residents are able to choose where they go on their international rotation, but there are established sites that can be utilized as well. Our first three Global Health Track Graduates went to three different countries on three different continents. Last year, residents went to Ecuador, India, Nepal and Namibia. The residents this year have chosen to go to Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico; to Alaska and then to a small island off the Bahamas to help the island implement an Emergency Medical System; and to a hospital in Uganda. Each of these places offered the residents a different type of experience related to their specific interests, such as obstetrical experience, rural medicine, tropical medicine, and language development.
In the coming years we plan to increase contacts and collaboration with our Mexican colleagues in Sonora, the state of Mexico just south of Arizona. We will increase our work with Hermosillo, the capital of Sonora, and Nogales, Sonora directly across the border from Nogales, Arizona. Since we are about thirty minutes from Mexico, it is a natural collaboration that can offer our residents a unique learning experience, and can offer the community there more regular care from our medical residents.
